WAGONS/CARRIAGES
Some may have seen an earlier posting I made on this wagon. Physical issues have kept me out of circulation for some time & I lost the contacts for response. In addition I have authenticated the info shared below.
I have owned this wagon since 1991, buying it at an auction in east central IL on the coldest day I ever spent at an auction. This was a couple years after I bought our farm about 15 miles away & I had grand plans for horses, etc. Got involved in too many projects to ever get that, so I stored it inside, moved it 550 miles to TN in 2007 & stored some more! Nearing 84, it's time for it to become someone else's to treasure. It is a solid, tight & strong chassis in every respect. No soft spots in the wood, rims are tight and wheel bearings seem to be in good shape, though I have never removed them for inspection. They have minimal end play and turn freely. From indications you see in the pictures, they were well greased.
The major flaw is that the former farmer owner had cut the tongue back to probably hook it to a lawn mower or the like for a parade. I had planned to extend that by simply adding proper length & coupling it with proper gusset plates so as to maintain the integrity of the beautifully crafted original tongue unit as seen in the pics.
I have spent considerable time over recent years on research of a wagon maker who might have used the name & type of reach plate on the wagon.
LeToolman (www.letoolman.com ) (Ontario) who appears to have a phenomenal antique & old item collection (For Sale, too but no wagons), tells me “B.M. Co. was the Birdsell Manufacturing Company, they made wagons…” in South Bend, IN. Further research fills in the details.
Here are links to the history of the B.M. Co. https://www.historymuseumsb.org/birdsell-manufacturing-company/, https://digital.library.in.gov/Record/SJCPL_p16827coll7-65, https://michianamemory.sjcpl.org/digital/collection/p16827coll7/id/65
